Vuoden vaihtuessa kertailemme maailmanlaajuisesti edellisen vuoden tapahtumia. Miellyttävimmät muistikuvamme liittyvät usein siihen, mikä on kehittänyt omaa maatamme kansalaisiamme ilahduttaen. Toteutuneiden ikävyyksien kohdalla pohdimme vastuita laajemmin. Miksi pahin on tapahtunut ja mitä ratkaisuja vakavan tilanteen korjaamiseksi voisimme tehdä. Tätä arviointia paremman lopputuloksen saavuttamiseksi tulevaisuudessa kristityt kutsuvat parannuksenteoksi. Megatrendien, luontokadon ja demokratian valtataisteluiden puhuttelussa meidän on tehtävä niin. Jos tahdomme turvata elämän edellytykset tulevillekin sukupolville.

Kreikankielinen sana oikoumene tarkoittaa koko asuttua maailmaa. Kristillisten kirkkojen ja yhteisöjen keskinäistä yhteyttä kuvataan sanalla ekumenia. Ekumeeninen liike syntyi 1800–1900-luvun taitteessa. Sen tavoitteena on tarjota hajallaan eläville kristityille mahdollisuus jakaa uskon- ja elämänkokemuksia yhdessä. Yhteisymmärrykseen kristittyjä kannustavat Jeesuksen sanat ”Minä rukoilen, että he kaikki olisivat yhtä, niin kuin sinä, Isä, olet minussa ja minä sinussa. Niin tulee heidänkin olla yhtä meidän kanssamme, jotta maailma uskoisi sinun lähettäneen minut.” (Joh.17:21.)

Kansainvälinen ekumeeninen rukousviikko on suhteellisen tuore ilmiö. Tammikuussa 2008 rukousviikko täytti 100 vuotta. Suomessa rukousviikkoon osallistuminen alkoi 1950-luvulla. Yhteinen rukous eri kirkkokuntien välillä ei ole enää kummajainen vaan viestii jaetusta vastuullisuudesta. Ennakkoluulojen voittaminen on kasvattanut ymmärrystä ja rikastuttanut kirkollista kulttuuria Suomessa.

Jesajan kirjassa (Jes 1:17) sanotaan ”opetelkaa tekemään hyvää, tavoitelkaa oikeudenmukaisuutta”. Tämä selkeä ja yksinkertaiselta kuulostava ohje on otettu vuoden 2023 kristittyjen kansainvälisten rukousviikkojen teemaksi.

Mitä suurempaan parannukseen tähdätään, sitä useamman sitoutumista tavoitteen saavuttamiseksi tarvitaan.

Vuoden ensimmäinen rukousviikko alkaa 18. tammikuuta ja toinen 24.10. Rauhan, ihmisoikeuksien ja kansainvälisen vastuun rukouspäivä aloittaa syksyllä vastuuviikon. Rukousviikoilla ainakin 120 maassa hiljennytään jumalanpalveluksissa, kirkkovaelluksissa, konserteissa ja tapahtumissa siksi, että tekisimme yhdessä hyvää oikeudenmukaisuutta tavoitellen.

Tasavallan presidentti Sauli Niinistö muistuttaa rukouspäiväjulistuksessa 2023, kuinka jokainen ihminen voi omalta osaltaan toteuttaa oikeudenmukaisuutta, torjua rasismia ja syrjintää, edistää tasa-arvoa, tehdä hyvää ja osoittaa vieraanvaraisuutta muukalaisia kohtaan omassa lähiympäristössään. Jeesuksen käsky rakastaa lähimmäistä niin kuin itseään ei ole vanhentunut. Tämän käskyn noudattaminen takaa hyvinvoinnin ei vain yhteiskunnalle vaan koko luomakunnalle.

Parannuksenteko ei ole hätäisten hommaa vaan vaatii päämäärätietoisuutta ja pitkäjänteisyyttä. Tämä pätee myös rukouselämässä.

Mitä suurempaan parannukseen tähdätään, sitä useamman sitoutumista tavoitteen saavuttamiseksi tarvitaan. Arvokas työ koko asutun maan pelastamiseksi ansaitsee tuen meiltä kaikilta. Ei vain vuoden vaihtuessa, vaan joka päivä. Vain yrittämällä meillä on mahdollisuus onnistua.

As Participants in the Inhabited World

At the turn of the year, we revisit the events of the previous year worldwide. Our most pleasant memories are often related to what has developed our own country to the delight of our citizens. When things go wrong, we consider the responsibilities more broadly. Why has the worst happened and what solutions could we make to rectify the serious situation. Christians call this evaluation to achieve a better outcome in the future repentance. In addressing megatrends, the loss of nature and the power struggles of democracy, we must do so if we intend to secure the conditions of life for future generations.

The Greek word oikoumenē means the whole inhabited world. The mutual connection of Christian churches and communities is described by the word ecumenical. The ecumenical movement was born at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. Its goal is to offer Christians living dispersedly the opportunity to share faith and life experiences together. Christians are encouraged to reach an understanding by the words of Jesus "I pray that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I in you. May they also be one in us, so that the world may believe that you sent me." (John 17:21.)

The international week of prayer for Christian Unity is a relatively recent phenomenon. In January 2008, the week of prayer turned 100 years old. In Finland, participation in the week of prayer began in the 1950s. Common prayer between different denominations is no longer unusual, but a message of shared responsibility. Overcoming prejudices has increased understanding and enriched church culture in Finland.

In the book of Isaiah (Is 1:17), it is said, "learn to do good, seek justice". This instruction, which is clear, and sounds simple has been adopted as the theme of the 2023 Christian International Weeks of Prayer.

The greater the improvement, the more commitment is needed in repentance to achieve the goal.

The first prayer week of the year begins on January 18 and the second, on October 24. The prayer day for peace, human rights and international responsibility marks the beginning of the week of responsibility in the fall. During the weeks of prayer, in at least 120 countries, church services, church walks or visits, concerts and events, we observe silence so that we could do good things together in the pursuit of justice.

The President of the Republic, Sauli Niinistö, reminds in the 2023 prayer day declaration how each person can do his or her part to implement justice, fight racism and discrimination, promote equality, do good things and show hospitality towards strangers in his/her own neighborhood. Jesus' command to love your neighbor as yourself is not outdated. Following this command guarantees well-being not only for society but also for the entire creation.

Repentance is not a rush job, but requires sense of direction and perseverance. This is also true in the prayer life.

The greater the improvement, the more commitment is needed in repentance to achieve the goal. The valuable work to save the entire inhabited earth merits support from all of us. Not just at the turn of the year, but every day. Only by trying, do we have a chance to succeed.
