Kesän 2026 näyttelyt Helsingin tuomiokirkon kryptassa

Kaikki näyttelyt ovat auki ma-la 10–17 ja su 11–17 ja niihin on vapaa pääsy.

5. Näyttely (19.8.–30.8.):

Itämeren saaristolintuja – Raimo Sundelinin valokuvia (John Nurmisen Säätiö).

Linnut, nuo ainoat höyhenpukuihin sonnustautuneet
vieraat, tuovat saaristoon kevään ja kesän. Saariston lintuja
valokuvaavalle haahka on airut. Sen parvien polveileva lento
ohi uloimpien luotojen jäätä tai nykyään vettä viistäen saa
aikaan läikähdyksen jossain syvemmällä. Haahkat on pakko
vastaanottaa kaikuvalla nasaalihuudolla ”auuu-o”.

Saaristovalokuvaaja Raimo Sundelin on seurannut Itämeren linnustoa jo yli viidenkymmenen vuoden ajan ja tallentanut saariston siivekkäiden elämää kameransa linssin kautta. Tänä aikana saariston lintumaailma on muuttunut huomattavasti: uusia pesimälajeja on vakiintunut, monet lajit ovat runsastuneet ja toiset puolestaan taantuneet.

Tuomiokirkon Kryptassa esillä oleva näyttely johdattaa kävijän saaristolintujen maailmaan noin kymmenen lintulajin kautta. Mukana ovat muun muassa haahka ja merikotka – saariston ikoniset lajit – sekä voimakkaita tunteita herättävät merimetso ja valkoposkihanhi. Kyhmyjoutsen puolestaan edustaa saaristoluonnon herkkää kauneutta ja arvokkuutta.

Ihmisen ja luonnon suhde näkyy saaristossa poikkeuksellisen herkästi. Saaristolinnut kertovat meille, miten Itämeri voi: niiden menestys tai taantuminen heijastaa meren tilaa, ravintoverkkojen muutoksia ja ihmisen toiminnan jälkiä. Linnut ovat osa yhteistä elinympäristöämme – ne muistuttavat, että meri ei ole vain maisema, vaan elävä kokonaisuus, jonka hyvinvointi kytkeytyy omiin valintoihimme.

Näyttelyn valokuvat ovat osa Raimo Sundelinin ja biologi Janne Lampolahden uutuusteosta Itämeren saaristolintuja – Skärgårdsfåglar vid Östersjön, joka avaa kuvien ja tekstien kautta kolmenkymmenen Itämeren keskeisen saaristolinnun tarinaa, elinympäristöä ja muuttuvaa tulevaisuutta.

Näyttelyn tuottaa John Nurmisen Säätiö, Itämeren suojelija, meren puolestapuhuja, merikulttuurin vaalija ja merikirjallisuuden kustantaja.‍

Archipelago Birds of the Baltic Sea Photographs by Raimo Sundelin

Birds – the only visitors dressed in feathers – bring spring and
summer to the archipelago. For a photographer who follows the
birds of the outer isles, the eider is their herald. The undulating
flight of its flocks past the outermost skerries, skimming the ice or
nowadays the water, stirs something deep within. The eiders simply
must be greeted with the echoing, nasal call “auuu-o”.

Archipelago photographer Raimo Sundelin has observed the birdlife of the Baltic Sea for more than fifty years, capturing the lives of its winged inhabitants through his camera lens. During this time, the archipelago’s bird community has changed significantly: new breeding species have established themselves, many species have increased in number, while others have declined.

The exhibition in the Cathedral Crypt guides visitors into the world of archipelago birds through around ten species. Among them are the eider and the white-tailed eagle – iconic species of the archipelago – as well as the cormorant and the barnacle goose, both of which evoke strong emotions. The mute swan, in turn, represents the delicate beauty and dignity of the archipelago’s nature.

The relationship between humans and nature is felt with exceptional sensitivity in the archipelago. The birds of the Baltic tell us how the sea is doing: their success or decline reflects the state of the marine environment, shifts in food webs, and the traces of human activity. The birds are part of our shared habitat – they remind us that the sea is not merely a landscape but a living whole whose wellbeing is intertwined with our own choices.

The photographs in the exhibition are part of Raimo Sundelin’s and biologist Janne Lampolahti’s new book Itämeren saaristolintuja – Skärgårdsfåglar vid Östersjön (Seabirds of the Baltic Archipelago), which through images and text explores the stories, habitats, and changing future of thirty key archipelago bird species of the Baltic Sea.

The exhibition is produced by the John Nurminen Foundation, guardian of the Baltic Sea, advocate for the marine environment, custodian of maritime culture, and publisher of maritime literature.
