Lauttasaari Church

Lauttasaari parish

27.01.2025, 15:18
The Lauttasaari church, built of sand-blasted white concrete, was completed in 1958. The church is a true of Lauttasaari island. It is close to nature and daylight pours in through its large windows.

Monumental stairs lined with walls of boulders lead to the church. A boulder standing in a paved water pool decorates the inner court. The bell tower stands a whopping 67.5 metres above sea level and dominates the cityscape of Lauttasaari island.

The aisle to the choir is paved with mottled marble from Lapland. The interior, lighting and communion set were designed by interior architect, Ilmari Tapiovaara. Representing constructive, original design, the communion cup and the handle of the flagon are decorated with precious stones. Instead of an altarpiece, there is a wooden cross by architect, Petäjä. The church textiles are by Annikki and Ilmari Tapiovaara and artist, Hilkka Vuorinen.

The organ was built by the Kangasala organ factory. It has 39 stops. The choir organ was produced by organ builder, Veikko Virtanen in 2000. The three bronze bells were cast by Veljekset Friis Oy.

The Lauttasaari church is used by the Lauttasaari parish. The St. Jacobs church for the Swedish parish, Johannes församlingen, is in the same building.
