We welcome you home

Do you ever feel like you’re not quite at home yet here in Helsinki? Are you looking for somewhere relaxed and easy-going where you can meet like-minded people? Would you like to get together for socialising, singing or just some shared contemplative silence in English? In Itäkeskus, we have just the place for you.

At St. Matthew’s Church, we welcome you just as you are. Regardless of your age, creed or nationality, no matter how you choose to live your life, our door is always open. Come and say hello, meet new people, pause for a moment and connect with God. Or if you’d prefer you could grab a coffee, play football or make some music.

Kristian Willis was appointed pastor at the Helsinki International Parish Church in Itäkeskus earlier this autumn. He has a vision for a people-centred community that embraces diversity and creates a safe place for people to explore their spirituality.

”At St. Matthews, what matters to us are the things that unite us and bring us together. People from all sorts of different religious backgrounds come here. Many of them don’t even know what their affiliation is. What we practice here is everyday ecumenism.”

Following many years spent in Turku, Raasepori, Tanzania and the United States, Willis recently returned to his childhood home of Helsinki. During their family’s time here, his Danish mother and English father had made their home within the city’s first ever international parish. Willis’s plans for the future include international confirmation classes and training for “isonen” junior leaders and communion assistants. He also has his sights set on an international parish football team.

Everything we do at the Helsinki International Parish is shaped by the wishes and ideas of the people who have come here from elsewhere. We also offer services in Arabic, Chinese, Estonian and Russian. We believe that all people need not just a social network but also a spiritual community to sustain them. Our diversity is not just limited to language – the more international we are the more we have to offer and the more enriched we become.
