Herttoniemi church
The Herttoniemi church, completed in 1958, is a multipurpose building, which houses, in addition to the church, a chapel for ceremonies, a gymnastics hall, an auditorium, an office and club facilities, and a youth office. The church was designed by the architect, Osmo Lappo. The multifunctional church hall can house festive occasions in addition to sporting activities. The hall has a stage equipped with modern technology for concerts and theatrical performances.
On the altar wall of the church there is a wooden crucifix by sculptor, Gunnar Uotila. The church textiles were designed by textile artist, Dora Jung, and the altar silver by Academician, Bertel Gardberg.
The parish meeting hall has a painting by artist, actor and author, Uuno Eskola, Kristus ristillä (Christ on the cross). The painting, Angelus, in the foyer was painted by Artist Anna Räsänen. There are pictures of the vicars of the parish on the wall of the other parish meeting hall. The newest work is the portrait of Eero Huovinen, Emeritus Bishop, painted by artist, Silja Rantanen in 2004. The work is on loan from the Helsinki diocese collections.
The church organ was built by Veikko Virtanen Oy in 1962. It has 25 stops. The bell tower, designed by Osmo lappo, has three Austrian bells, which have the engravings “Sola gratia” (Grace alone), “Sola fide” (By faith alone) and “Propter Christum” (Because of Christ). Two of the bells were donations, one from the industrial establishment, G.W. Sohlberg, which operated in the area, the other from a group of Herttoniemi companies and private parishioners.
The Herttoniemi parish church was renovated in 2001–2002.
Celebrations at the church
Organising a baptism, a wedding or a funeral is free of charge at the church for members of the church.
The church seats 375. There are two parish meeting halls: one seats 60, the other 40. The halls can be combined with each other and the church space by opening the separating wall and folding doors. In addition, the multifunctional church hall seats about 100 people.
The hall is adjoined by a well-equipped kitchen with dinner and coffee tableware for a hundred people.
